Project Description
This project is part of the Pogues Run Initiative, a series of projects to
reduce pollution from sewage overflows and remove property from the Pogues
Run 100-year floodplain. The project will significantly reduce the CSOs
that discharge a mixture of raw sewage and stormwater to Pogues Run at
four locations during rainy weather. The north end of the project will
intercept flow upstream of CSO #035 at 10th Street with a new underground
concrete structure. Up to 68,000 gallons per minute can be carried through
a new 72” diameter sewer to Michigan and Dorman streets, where a new
underground concrete structure will pick up flow from both the new 72”
sewer and an existing 156”x 81” brick sewer upstream of CSO #034. During
dry weather, the Michigan Street Structure will send flows to the
wastewater treatment plant. During wet weather, excess flow will spill
into a new 144” diameter tunnel running from Michigan and Dorman Streets
to New York Street at Pogues Run. The existing entrance to the Pogues Run
twin box culvert at New York Street will be rebuilt to take up to 317,000
gallons per minute of combined sewage flow from the 144” diameter tunnel.
