Project Description

This project addressed flooding in a large near east side Indianapolis neighborhood known as Cottage Homes. The construction of two major flood control facilities upstream was undertaken as part of the previously completed Pogues Run Watershed comprehensive flood control/CSO reduction study by CBBEL. These projects would significantly lower the peak discharge, hence base flood elevations affecting the neighborhood. However, the flood elevations had to be lowered further to eliminate the flooding of 250 structures in this low lying area. The flood evaluation and recommended plan for removal of the flood hazard included several project components including two bridge removals, a bridge replacement, and channel improvements at two locations. The project included extensive hydraulic analyses, agency permitting, and coordination with the affected property owners.
