Project Description

CBBEL staff are lead consultant for the Maumee River Basin Commission, including the development of its Flood Control Master Plan. The project involved intensive coordination between Federal, State, and local governments in an environmentally sensitive area and required careful assessment of several types of structural as well as non-structural alternative solutions. Major recommendations of the study included the adoption of uniform floodplain, stormwater, and erosion control ordinances in the Basin, buyout and floodproofing of more than 1,250 residential and non-residential structures, protection of two study reaches by means of levees and floodwalls, and conversion of several acres of flooded agricultural lands from the agricultural land use to woodland, wetland, and park corridors. The Master Plan which fostered a broad consensus among various governmental agencies, agricultural interests, and environmental groups was unanimously approved in May 1995 and is currently in the implementation phase.
