Project Description

The Deercroft Recycling and Disposal Facility is a municipal solid waste landfill located in north-western Indiana. This site received approximately 3,250 tons of waste per day during the service period.

The landfill liner system consists of a verified subgrade, 3 feet of recompacted soil liner, a 60-mil HDPE geomembrane liner, a 16-ounce nonwoven geotextile, and a 1-ft gravel leachate drainage layer. The landfill has a significant groundwater problem that makes disposal area design and construction difficult.

Scope of Engineering & Professional Services

CBBEL staff prepared a minor permit modification for the removal of a leachate sump and the revision of the floor grades; the application was submitted to and approved by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). A final cover permit modification was also prepared and submitted to IDEM to incorporate the new composite liner capping system over cells built with composite liners.  CBBEL staff used the U.S. EPA’s HELP model to evaluate and permit alternative leachate management systems for the landfill.
